Time to dust off the skis - the snow is here!

After a relatively snow-free winter last year this winter looks set to be a fantastic one! Bucket loads of the white stuff started falling in late October and by the time Surf-Atlantico got up to the slopes last week for the first time this season the conditions were near-perfect with all of Alto Campoo's lifts and runs open for business.

An awesome day was had by all as we squeezed out every minute of daylight available and were the last ones to make our way back down the piste at the end of the day. Check out these pics to get an idea of just how great conditions are here in Cantabria at the moment or, better still, book yourself onto a Surf&Ski week-long Adventure and let us transport you from piste to beach and back again for a holiday you won't forget.

We currently have availability on Surf&Ski Adventures starting in early January right through to the end of March. Prices start at just €599 per person - click here for more info.

Lights, Camera, Action!
The story started to unfold back in April with an international bunch braving the Spring temperatures (a balmy 20c!) as Bibby, Surf-Atlantico's trusty surf wagon, traversed her way along the Spanish north coast on her first of the many trips she would take this year.
For some it was a first taste of the magical pastime that is Surfing, for others it was a chance to experience some new breaks - something this area of the world has in bountiful numbers. Suffice to say an addiction to riding waves was the order of the week and all parties went home with a new or fresh enthusiasm for the sport.
A couple from Southampton hit the Springtime jackpot back in mid-April whilst on an SA Weekend Escape when Cantabria was blessed with Summer temperatures, clear blue skies yet with the wintry backdrop of the snow-covered 'Picos de Europa'. It made for an incredible setting for what was the perfect weekend of surf and Spanish culture.
The Aussies overran us in May with the majority of Adventure-seekers that month hailing from Antipodean shores - (must be a bad month for them back home?). On a particularly memorable trip in late May it was just a couple of Irish girls representing the European contingent - but represent it they did well when, despite the odds being stacked against them, they came out victorious in the famous SA poker game winning the prestigious SA T-shirt for their efforts. It was a fantastic week where great fun was had by all with some going away hooked on surfing enough to invest in their first board. Cider flowed, the sun shone, poker was won and lost and the sunset BBQs were legendary - just check out this film if you don't believe us...

In June one weekend sticks out in our minds as unforgettable when two Welsh Surfers from Swansea were witness to why this place is ranked as having some of the finest waves on the planet when they spent 3 days riding perfect, glassy 3-4ft waves down at Playa de Meron under blues skies and with offshore winds. Dan and Ben, (that's us - Surf-Atlantico's directors), had some fun that weekend too!
Denmark, Turkey, New Zealand, The UK, Japan, Bosnia, Australia, Tahiti, Norway and Syria were just some of the countries our guests hailed from during July - a truly international month with yet more fine weather and great conditions. The grilled sardines in Lastres, Asturias were particularly good that month whilst Ribadesella, the first stop on the Surfari, turned into a Spanish party town with the ever-present aroma of cider hanging sweetly in the air. Zarautz buzzed, San Sebastian rocked and Cantabria, with its rolling hills, golden sand and towering mountains, was Heaven on Earth.

Ben and Dan worked their booties off in August (which wasn't a problem as the water temperatures were a tepid 23c!), with back-to-back Surfaris throughout the month. Highlights included some epic swell mid-month lighting up places usually better known as good winter wave spots - sheltered Suances in particular receiving some monster swell which got the heart pounding and the adrenalin pumping. Then there were the more chilled evening sessions down at out-of-the-way Oyambre with the waves to ourselves, mountainous lunches followed by 5-star cheesecake in beautiful Santillana del Mar, some great nights out in buzzing San Seb and countless al fresco breakfasts in stunning settings.
August was also a month of firsts with our first Trans-Atlantic guests along for the ride from Canada, our first return thrill-seekers (along with their family from Jersey) and our first full month with no rain. The weather really was incredible - just take a look at the photos!
The 6 month Surfari season's final act played out on a climactic high with some unforgettable trips, enthusiastic Adventurers and near constant tunes emanating from Bibby's hard-working sound system. Mundaka decided to show us what she could do with near perfect conditions mid-month - a warm up for the ASP event in early October, Rodiles came up trumps finally and Meron gave us some of her most beautiful sea bumps of the season, (see photo).
With a late summer buzz right across Spain's North Shore and a couple of public holidays thrown in for good measure, beer flowed, sangria was mixed and Txacoli poured. The mouth-watering pinxos in the Basque Country were particularly tasty and the stars descended on San Sebastian for the international film festival with popping flash bulbs providing a fitting backdrop to our final surf session of the season down on San Seb's town beach.
